What Are Reciprocal links?
Reciprocal linking, also known as link swapping, involves placing a link to your site on another site in exchange for them placing their link on yours. Link swapping or link exchange can help increase Website traffic and increase your search engine rankings. Also, it’s a great way to get very warm leads. A Web surfer who clicks on your link from another site has done so out of his or her own volition to gather information – they haven’t been lured in with an offer. Does this mean that the more sites you swap links with, the better? Not exactly. Just like keyword abuse changed the rules of Web crawling and ranking, link swap abuse has done the same thing. So, in order to make link swapping a successful part of your internet marketing strategy, you need to do a good deal of research when choosing sites with which you want to exchange links.  Tips for finding appropriate sites for link exchange:

  • Search the Web for reciprocal link directories, choose sites you think are appropriate, then visit them and do a bit more research. Make sure the site has working links, a good amount of appropriate content, etc. It doesn’t have to be the most optimized site on the Web, but it should be well constructed
  • Check out your competitors. See who they swap links with, then contact those sites as well. Some people even swap links with competitors if they feel it will be more of a benefit than a hindrance.
  • Avoid link farms – Google has shut down link farms in the past and in some cases will penalize you for using them. A link farm is a site where all of the webpages hyperlink to every other page on the site.

You want to find sites that complement yours. Make sure they are high quality sites. You can start by reviewing your competitor’s sites and see who they link to. Then, you’ll need to send a link swap letter.

Here are some tips on drafting a successful letter.

  • Do a bit of research to find out the name of the Webmaster
  • In the subject line, state directly that you’re interested in a link swap
  • Your site with the URL to your homepage in the first paragraph
  • Get to the point – state that you want to swap links
  • Detail out the process of how you want the link swap to work

Here’s an example of an email you can send to a Webmaster requesting a link exchange. Notice that it’s short and to the point.
